Honolulu lawmakers confront hotel tax pressures

Transit officials want the Honolulu City Council to use some its its new hotel taxing power to help cover a rail shortfall, but the hospitality industry would rather the current room tax not increase. The state this year authorized localities to impose their own hotel tax of up to 3%, while keeping for itself the proceeds from a 10.25% state room tax that previously were distributed to cities and towns.
