Boeing to sign Qatar Airways 777X freighter launch order this week
Boeing is set to sign a launch order from Qatar Airways for a new freighter version of its 777-8X passenger jet on Monday, in a Washington ceremony coinciding with a visit by the Gulf state’s ruling emir, U.S. officials said.
According to Reuters, Qatar Airways is considering renewing its existing fleet of around 34 freighters with the new Boeing 777X in a deal potentially worth $14bn.
“Qatar has indicated it is willing to look at buying as many as 50 freighters, with the larger number likely to include options,” said Reuters.
Boeing said in 2021 “A freighter version is being considered using the 777-8X airframe and may be available 18-24 months after the -8X enters service.” The 777-8F is expected to have a 788,000 lb (357 tonnes) max take-off weight and carry about 110 to 112 tonnes of cargo. The four engine 747-8F can carry up to 130 tonnes of freight, but is less fuel efficient than the two engine 777-8X.
Qatar Airways’ current freighter fleet is made up of 24 Boeing 777-200LRF freighters and two 747-8Fs.
