New 3% local hotel tax pays off for Hawaii counties

The 3% lodging tax enacted by all four Hawaii counties to replace a repealed state sharing program has generated more revenue than the old state system would have produced. The legislature allowed counties to add the tax on top of the 10.25% state tax after voting to divert former local allotments from that tax to the state’s general fund.
