Volunteer pilots offer adventures to kids with special needs

Pilots volunteering with Challenge Air provide free 30-minute flights to children with special needs to inspire an interest in aviation and give them a sense of accomplishment. The organization, which has flown more than 40,000 children, was founded in the early 1990s by Rick Amber, the late Navy pilot who used a wheelchair and was the first Federal Aviation Administration-certified aviator to use hand controls for brakes and rudders.
