MSC Air Cargo prepares for take off as first freighter arrives
MSC Air Cargo will soon launch operations as its partner airline Atlas Air has taken delivery of the first freighter that it will operate on behalf of the shipping company.
Atlas Air said that is had today taken delivery of a B777-2oo freighter that it will operate on behalf of MSC Air Cargo as part of a previously announced ACMI agreement.
The B777-200 Freighter will fly on routes between China, the US, Mexico and Europe.
The aircraft is the first of four of the model that Atlas Air will operate on behalf of MSC, with operations expected to be launched in the first quarter of next year.
MSC said its air cargo operation would complement its box shipping operation and expand services on key trade lanes for industries that have traditionally required air cargo needs.
Jannie Davel, senior vice president, air cargo, at MSC, said: “Our customers need the option of air solutions, which is why we’re integrating this transportation mode to complement our extensive maritime and land cargo operations. The delivery of this first aircraft marks the start of our long-term investment in air cargo.
“I have spoken to numerous partners and customers right across the market and it is very clear that air cargo can enable a range of companies to meet their logistics needs.
“Flying adds options, speed, flexibility and reliability to supply chain management, and there are particular benefits for moving perishables, such as fruit and vegetables, pharmaceutical and other healthcare products and high-value goods.”
John Dietrich, president and chief executive, Atlas Air Worldwide, added: “We are looking forward to this partnership with MSC, the world’s largest shipping company, as they enter into air cargo.
“We are pleased that all four of our newly acquired 777-200Fs are placed on a long-term basis with MSC, providing them with dedicated capacity to support their growth and expansion.”
The B777-200 is the longest-range twin-engine freighter in the world, capable of flying 9,038km.
The last year has seen all three of the world’s largest shipping lines invest in air cargo operations.
Maersk Air Cargo is in the process of launching freighter operations and has ordered two new B777 Freighters to be delivered by Boeing in 2024 and leased three B767-300 Freighters which will be operational next year through Cargo Aircraft Management, the leasing arm of ATSG.
Three more B767 will be operated for the Danish shipping giant by Amerijet.
CMA CGM is also entering air cargo and has ordered a series of freighters, and has also formed a partnership with Air France KLM.
