Tips for a Budget-Friendly City Break in Vienna

If you’re considering a European city break this summer, make sure to include Austria’s vibrant and picturesque capital, Vienna, at the top of your list. For the third time in the past five years, Vienna has claimed the coveted first place in the 2022 Global Liveability Index, an annual report published by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

Situated in the eastern part of Austria, Vienna boasts a rich cultural heritage, serving as the birthplace of countless cultural icons. With nearly 50 percent of the city comprised of green spaces, there are ample parks and gardens to unwind and relax.

Vienna stands as one of Europe’s grandest cities, showcasing architectural gems and having been home to renowned former residents. In fact, it seems that every notable European composer, including Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, and Mahler, found inspiration within its borders.

However, it’s worth noting that Vienna is not the most budget-friendly city in the world. Austria was ranked the 18th most expensive country to live in by CEOWORLD Magazine. Although not as costly as famously-expensive cities like London, it’s important to plan accordingly if you’re on a tight budget.

Vienna does offer affordable accommodation options if you’re willing to do some searching. For those who enjoy the outdoors, Aktiv Camping Neue Donau, a campsite just outside the city, provides an affordable option starting from €36 per night for two adults.

Vienna is also home to several excellent hostels. Vienna Boutique Hostel, with free WiFi and rooms starting from €29.95 per night, and Hostel Ruthensteine, which features a delightful garden and music space, offer comfortable and budget-friendly stays starting from €16.97 per night.

If you have a slightly larger budget and prioritize sustainable travel, consider the Henriette City Hotel, which has received multiple awards for its eco-credentials and holds certification from the EU Ecolabel.

Austria is renowned for its hearty meat dishes, such as tafelspitz (boiled beef in broth) and wiener schnitzel, traditionally made from veal that is pounded flat, coated in breadcrumbs, and fried. For a taste of authentic schnitzel at reasonable prices, head to Schnitzelwirt, a popular spot among both tourists and locals.

If you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, you’ll be pleased to discover the thriving vegan movement in Vienna. Visit Veganista for the best vegan ice cream in town, with shops scattered throughout the city. With flavors ranging from basil to maple and pecan, you’re sure to find a delightful treat or two.

One of the most affordable and relaxing activities in Vienna is exploring its breathtaking green spaces. Burggarten and Stadtpark are free to enter, with Burggarten showcasing a stunning palm house, while Stadtpark is home to a statue honoring Mozart, a must-see for music lovers.

During the summer months, join the locals in enjoying the 21km long Danube Island, an artificial island in central Vienna. It offers the world’s largest trampoline center and a massive water playground for children. With beaches and bathing sites available, Danube Island is an ideal spot to soak up the Viennese sun.

If you plan to visit numerous tourist sites in the city, consider obtaining a Vienna Card. Available for 1-3 days, the card grants unlimited access to public transport and offers discounts at various museums, shops, and restaurants. You can conveniently purchase the card at the airport or online.
