Bukovel, Ukraine’s largest ski resort located in the Carpathian Mountains, has remained open despite the ongoing conflict with Russia. The resort offers 75 kilometers of pistes and 17 lifts, providing visitors with an opportunity to find normality and respite from the devastating war.

For many visitors like Liliya, a resident from a region near the Russian border, a ski holiday in Bukovel serves as a way to “forget about the war.” However, reminders of the conflict are still present, with mobile phone alerts about sirens back home and occasional sounds of sirens in the resort. Ski instructor Bogdan Nakonechniy notes that while fewer people have visited this year, those who do appreciate the experience more, and there is a different vibe compared to previous years.

The lack of foreign tourists has had a significant impact on the resort. Previously, 30% of customers were foreign, but now almost all visitors are Ukrainian. The resort also faces challenges with supplies, as foreign brands are hesitant to send new equipment due to payment concerns. Despite these difficulties, Bukovel has managed to continue operating, and locals are hopeful that the tourism business will flourish again when Ukraine achieves victory in the conflict.

Bukovel serves as a testament to the resilience of the Ukrainian people and their determination to maintain a sense of normalcy and enjoyment amidst challenging circumstances.
