Delta Air Lines Flight from Edinburgh to New York Canceled as Pilot Arrested Prior to Takeoff

In an unprecedented turn of events, a Delta Air Lines flight scheduled to depart from Edinburgh Airport (EDI) to New York’s John F Kennedy Airport (JFK) on June 16, 2023, was canceled due to an unexpected reason – the arrest of the pilot just moments before takeoff.

Passengers were in the process of boarding the aircraft when the arrest took place, approximately 35 minutes before the scheduled departure time. The arrest was made in connection with the Railways and Transport Safety Act 2003, as confirmed by Police Scotland to various media outlets.

According to a spokesperson from Police Scotland, the 61-year-old pilot was taken into custody at Edinburgh Airport and subsequently charged. He is set to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, June 19, 2023, and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal for further investigation.

Delta Air Lines also confirmed the incident and informed AirLive that they are fully cooperating with the authorities in their ongoing investigation.

The Railways and Transportation Act 2003 strictly limits a pilot’s blood alcohol content to 0.02, significantly lower than the legal limit for driving at 0.08. This stringent regulation ensures that even a small amount of alcohol in a pilot’s system would disqualify them from operating an aircraft.

If found guilty of being intoxicated before operating a flight, the experienced pilot could face severe consequences, including imprisonment, hefty fines, and the revocation of their pilot license.
