When it comes to safety in the United States, smaller cities often lead the way. One such example is Lexington, Mass., a historic town immersed in Revolutionary War heritage, and now recognized as one of the top 10 safest cities in the country, as per a recent Visual Capitalist study.

However, it’s essential to conduct thorough research before assuming that small cities are automatically safe. Surprisingly, some of the tiniest places can be among the most dangerous. For instance, Bessemer, Alabama, with a population of approximately 26,000, boasts a violent crime rate of 33.1 incidents per 1,000 residents.

The study exclusively focused on cities with populations exceeding 25,000, considering various index crimes, such as arson, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault.

The Northeast region stands out in terms of safety, with 40% of the 100 safest U.S. cities located there. Here are the top 10:

  1. Ridgefield, Connecticut
  2. Franklin, Massachusetts
  3. Lake in the Hills, Illinois
  4. Marshfield, Massachusetts
  5. Burlington, Massachusetts
  6. Fulshear, Texas
  7. Zionsville, Indiana
  8. Lexington, Massachusetts
  9. Muskego, Wisconsin
  10. Rexburg, Idaho

When planning your next destination, keep these safe havens in mind for a worry-free and enjoyable experience.
