Boeing’s AAM Company, Wisk Aero, Makes Historic First Public Demonstration of Fully Autonomous eVTOL Fixed-Wing Aircraft

Witnessed by Enthralled Crowds at EAA AirVenture Airshow in Oshkosh, United States

Oshkosh, United States – July 25, 2023: In a groundbreaking display of technological prowess, Boeing’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) subsidiary, Wisk Aero, astounded spectators at the EAA AirVenture Airshow by performing the first-ever public demonstration of a fully autonomous eVTOL fixed-wing aircraft.

The mesmerizing event drew large crowds who had gathered at the airshow to witness this historic moment in aviation history. Wisk Aero’s Generation 5 aircraft took center stage during the demonstration, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation. Meanwhile, Wisk is working towards certifying their Generation 6 air taxi, signaling their dedication to pushing the boundaries of autonomous air travel.

Wisk Aero expressed their pride and excitement on Twitter, congratulating their entire team for the remarkable effort put into making the demonstration a reality. While many companies have been developing piloted eVTOLs, Wisk has chosen to focus on fully autonomous aircraft, firmly believing that self-driving vehicles are the future of the industry.

During the Paris Air Show in June 2023, Wisk’s CEO, Brian Yutko, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to autonomy. He confidently stated that Wisk Aero aims to achieve full autonomy and secure certification before the end of the decade, emphasizing that there is no alternative plan.

The awe-inspiring video of the demonstration captured the Wisk air taxi gracefully flying forward, rotating, and hovering in the air, showcasing the marvel of autonomous flight technology.

In a significant development earlier this year, Wisk Aero became a fully owned subsidiary of Boeing as of May 31, 2023. Prior to the acquisition, Boeing and AAM startup Kittyhawk were the two shareholders of the Californian startup. Wisk Aero was initially established in 2019 as a joint venture between Boeing and Kitty Hawk Corporation, founded by Google co-founder Larry Page.

Boeing’s substantial investment of nearly half a billion dollars in the self-flying electric air taxi developer in 2022 underscores the aerospace giant’s confidence in the potential of this cutting-edge technology.

Wisk’s aircraft boasts a fixed-wing platform powered by 12 independent rotors, six on each wing. It showcases impressive capabilities, flying at altitudes ranging from 1500 to 5000 feet and achieving speeds of up to 100 miles per hour (160km/h) with a range of approximately 25 miles (40 km).

As the aviation industry takes strides toward autonomous air travel, Wisk Aero’s achievements stand as a testament to the exciting future of self-driving aircraft. The successful demonstration represents a significant milestone in the journey towards revolutionizing the way people travel by air.
