FedEx Expands World Hub in Memphis with New Sorting Facility

FedEx is expanding its World Hub in Memphis, Tennessee, with a new sorting facility that will increase its capacity and efficiency. The company has filed a building permit for a 1.3-million-square-foot facility that will cost $220 million to build. The facility will be located on the west side of the hub, near the FedEx Express headquarters.

The new sorting facility is part of FedEx’s ongoing modernization of its World Hub, which began in 2018 and is expected to be completed by 2025. The project aims to improve the hub’s operations, technology, and infrastructure to meet the growing demand for e-commerce and international shipments. FedEx has previously announced a $1.5 billion investment to upgrade its main sorting facility and a $450 million investment to build another secondary sorting facility.

The World Hub is the largest and busiest hub in FedEx’s network, handling more than 180,000 packages per hour and connecting customers in more than 220 countries and territories. The hub employs more than 11,000 people and operates more than 300 flights per day. The hub’s modernization will create more jobs, enhance service quality, and reduce environmental impact.
