FAA Extends Slot Waiver for New York Airports Amid Air Traffic Controller Shortage

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced an extension of the slot waiver for airports in the New York City area, including John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

This extension, effective until October 28, 2023, is in response to the ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers at the New York Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility (N90). The slot waiver allows airlines to adjust flight schedules without losing their slots, maintaining the safety and efficiency of airspace operations.

The FAA emphasized the importance of addressing staffing challenges at N90, which plays a pivotal role in managing arrivals and departures for major New York airports and nearby facilities. The FAA is collaborating with the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) to develop long-term solutions to resolve staffing issues.
