India’s Aviation Regulator Proposes Measures to Address Pilot Fatigue
India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation has put forth draft regulations aimed at addressing rising complaints of pilot fatigue. The proposal includes reducing the maximum flight duty period for nighttime operations from 13 hours to 10 hours and increasing the minimum weekly rest period from 36 hours to 48 hours for pilots. These changes come after the regulator conducted a review of pilot fatigue data following an incident in which an IndiGo pilot collapsed and died in August.
While such rule changes are typical, they usually undergo a review process involving airlines, pilots, and other stakeholders before being finalized. Pilot fatigue is a global concern, and India, as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets, is actively working to address this issue.
