UPS Terminates 35 Newly Organized U.S. Workers, Prompting Teamsters Union Response

The Teamsters union, representing U.S. workers at United Parcel Service, has raised concerns over the recent termination of around 35 newly organized employees at the delivery giant. The union has announced plans to take action, including filing unfair labor practice charges and considering the possibility of a strike.

These workers, consisting of specialist and administrative roles, had recently organized with Teamsters Local 89 at UPS’s Centennial hub located in Louisville, Kentucky.

In response to the terminations, International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien issued a statement, emphasizing that UPS had disregarded the ruling of an independent arbitrator. The company’s claim that the work should be managed by non-union employees was contested. O’Brien warned, “If UPS fails to rectify this situation promptly, a strike could be imminent. Our union stands ready to take action and will not yield.”

Notably, the Teamsters union had represented approximately 340,000 UPS workers during the negotiation of a contract earlier in the year.

As of now, UPS has not provided an official response to these developments.
