Japan Airlines Shifts A350-1000 Debut to Early 2024, Plans Tokyo Haneda – New York JFK Launch

Japan Airlines (JAL) has adjusted its plans for the entry-into-service (EIS) of the Airbus A350-1000, now targeting January 24, 2024. The carrier intends to initiate revenue operations with the A350-1000 by deploying the first aircraft on the highly anticipated Tokyo Haneda – New York JFK route. In a press release issued on December 10, JAL also revealed that Dallas/Fort Worth would become the second non-Japanese destination to be served by the A350-1000.

Despite minor delivery delays, Japan Airlines remains committed to introducing the long-range Airbus widebodies into its fleet. The initial plan was to have the A350-1000s in service this year, but the first aircraft is yet to ferry to Tokyo. However, JAL anticipates imminent delivery, with a second A350-1000 expected by March 31, 2024. This will enable the airline to transition from every second day to daily services on the Tokyo Haneda – New York JFK route.

As of now, JAL operates two daily roundtrip flights using the Boeing 777-300ER on the Tokyo Haneda – New York JFK route, according to ch-aviation schedules data. The A350-1000 will initially be deployed on the late morning departure (JL6) from Haneda and the early afternoon departure (JL5) from New York.

“To enhance customer satisfaction and to strive towards a sustainable future, JAL will be replacing its fleet of 777-300ERs with new A350-1000 international aircraft,” stated the press release.

While the exact start date for deploying the A350-1000 on the Tokyo Haneda – Dallas Fort Worth route was not provided, JAL mentioned that it would occur after the delivery of the third A350-1000. Presently, the airline operates a daily 777-300ER roundtrip on that particular route.
