Cebu Pacific Eyes Major Narrowbody Aircraft Order, Issues Request for Proposal

Cebu Pacific Air, one of the leading low-cost carriers in the Philippines, is gearing up for a substantial narrowbody aircraft order, marking a significant milestone for the country’s aviation industry. CEO Mike Szucs revealed plans to issue a request for proposal (RFP) for what he described as the largest narrowbody aircraft order ever to emerge from the Philippines.

Szucs emphasized the magnitude of the order, stating, “This is an extremely large order for Cebu Pacific certainly, but even in the Philippines, it’s by far the largest order I think that will ever be placed.” The RFP, set to be formally launched in the coming weeks, will be a pivotal step for the airline in determining its future fleet composition.

Cebu Pacific currently operates an all-Airbus fleet, including A320-200s, A320-200Ns, A321-200s, A321-200NXs, A330-300s, and A330-900Ns. With 44 additional aircraft on order from Airbus, the airline has been a longstanding customer of the European manufacturer. However, Boeing is now in contention due to concerns related to Pratt & Whitney engine issues affecting Airbus aircraft.

Szucs highlighted that the consideration of Boeing options is a risk-diversification strategy, stating, “Buying Boeings could help the carrier diversify risk – so we haven’t got all our eggs in one basket.” The decision between Airbus and Boeing is expected to be based on the optimal financial and operational outcome for Cebu Pacific.

The RFP process is estimated to take three to six months, with the airline aiming to secure the best solution for both financial viability and operational efficiency. Cebu Pacific’s announcement comes in the backdrop of potential out-of-service periods for some of its A320neo and A321neo aircraft due to engine inspections following a Pratt & Whitney recall.
