Kenya Airways Embarks on New Chapter with 737-800F Operations Starting Early 2024
In a strategic move, Kenya Airways is set to launch its brand-new Boeing 737-800F freighter operations on January 15, 2024. The Commercial Director for Cargo, Peter Musola, revealed this exciting development during a conference in India, outlining the airline’s plans to initially deploy the freighter on the Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta to Sharjah to Mumbai International and back to Nairobi route.
According to Musola, the decision to commence operations on this route stems from India’s promising cargo market, with Mumbai serving as a key gateway to the country. Kenya Airways aims to operate the route four times a week initially, with a focus on saturating the cargo market in Mumbai before expanding its footprint to other destinations within India.
As reported by logistics news website STAT Trade Times, the airline is strategically targeting the transportation of various high-demand products such as pharmaceuticals, spare parts, machinery, high-tech equipment, consumer goods, and electronics. Musola emphasized the significance of India as a manufacturing powerhouse, highlighting the increasing demand for these products in Africa. The airline aims to position itself as a key player in facilitating this cargo movement.
Kenya Airways received its first 737-800 converted freighter in late November 2023, marking a pivotal moment in its fleet expansion. The airline, however, has kept the identity of the freighter under wraps and has not yet responded to requests for comment. Another converted 737-800 is expected to join the fleet in February 2024.
Currently, Kenya Airways’ cargo fleet consists of two 737-300SF aircraft. The introduction of the new 737-800 freighters signifies the airline’s commitment to enhancing its cargo capabilities and tapping into emerging markets. As the airline gears up for this exciting venture, industry experts are keenly watching how Kenya Airways will carve its niche in the dynamic and competitive air cargo landscape.
