Turkish Airlines Expands Global Reach: Unveils New Routes to Brazil and Melbourne

Turkish Airlines is set to significantly enhance its international connectivity with a series of strategic expansions and collaborations. Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) recently confirmed a series of new air service agreements aimed at boosting air traffic to and from Latin America. A key development in this initiative is the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Türkiye, lifting restrictions on the number of flights between the two nations. This agreement enables airlines to freely decide the frequency and capacity of international air transport services, based on market demands. Airlines will also enjoy the flexibility of fifth-freedom traffic rights at various points.

Presently, Turkish Airlines is the sole operator of nonstop flights between Istanbul Airport and Sao Paulo Guarulhos International Airport, with 11 weekly flights using Airbus A350-900 aircraft. The airline, a Star Alliance member, has been keen on expanding its presence in the Brazilian market, with Rio de Janeiro identified as a potential destination.

In addition, Turkish Airlines fortified its presence in Brazil through a codeshare agreement with GOL Linhas Aéreas in April 2022. This partnership extends to GOL’s entire domestic network and includes international routes from Sao Paulo to cities in Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Chile.

Moreover, ANAC’s recent agreements aren’t limited to Türkiye. Deals have been signed with nations like Uganda, Antigua and Barbuda, Austria, Italy, Iceland, and Saudi Arabia, with further agreements with the Czech Republic and Oman awaiting ratification. Enhancements in agreements with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have also been made, focusing on passenger and cargo services.

In pursuit of attracting more airlines and routes, ANAC launched the Fly2Brazil program, following its move to simplify regulations for foreign carriers in September 2022. The program aims to stimulate competition and enhance Brazil’s connectivity with international destinations.

Simultaneously, Turkish Airlines is extending its global footprint to Australia, with Melbourne confirmed as its first destination. The airline plans to start scheduled flights to Melbourne, driven by favorable market conditions. The Australian government’s decision to increase weekly flight allowances from Türkiye presents a significant opportunity for expansion. This includes access to Australia’s major international gateways and the upcoming Western Sydney International Airport.

Initially, Turkish Airlines may start with a one-stop service to Melbourne via Singapore, using Boeing 787-9 aircraft. However, the long-term goal includes nonstop services with A350-1000 or 777X planes. The airline is also exploring a new partnership with Australian domestic carrier Rex, underscoring its commitment to enhancing its global route network.
