Lynx Air’s 2024 Expansion: New Routes to Boston and San Francisco from Toronto
In a significant development for Canadian air travel, Lynx Air, a Canadian ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC), is set to enhance its flight network in 2024 by introducing new routes to Boston and San Francisco from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). This expansion marks a strategic move by Lynx Air to provide affordable travel options to major U.S. destinations.
Beginning on March 28, 2024, Lynx Air will launch services between YYZ and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). Utilizing their fleet of Boeing 737-8s, the airline will initially operate this route four times a week, with plans to increase the frequency to six times weekly from April 22. This route places Lynx Air in direct competition with Air Canada.
Further expanding its U.S. presence, Lynx Air will inaugurate flights to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) from YYZ on May 3, 2024. The service will start with four weekly flights, escalating to daily flights from June 11, 2024. This new route sees Lynx Air competing with major carriers like Air Canada, Porter Airlines, and United Airlines.
Vijay Bathija, Chief Commercial Officer of Lynx Air, highlights the significance of these new routes. He remarks that adding Boston and San Francisco to their network reflects the airline’s commitment to providing ultra-affordable travel options. The strategy focuses on connecting the Toronto area market to high-demand U.S. locations where traditionally, airfares have been steep, and low-cost alternatives have been scarce.
Lynx Air’s expansion into the U.S. market began in January, with the introduction of flights to Tampa International Airport (TPA) from both YYZ and Montreal Trudeau International Airport (YUL) in November. The airline also operates flights from YYZ to Orlando International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Additionally, service between YUL and Las Vegas Reid International Airport commenced in late August.
Looking ahead, Lynx Air is set to make its debut in the Mexican market in February 2024. The airline plans to start daily flights between YYZ and Cancun International Airport, further diversifying its international route offerings and reinforcing its position as a significant player in the North American low-cost airline industry.
