Royal Caribbean Group is embarking on a significant transformation project for one of its early Oasis-class vessels, the Allure of the Seas, as announced by Jason Liberty, the company’s President and CEO. The announcement came during the fourth-quarter earnings call last week, indicating a resurgence of plans previously stalled by the global pandemic.

The Allure of the Seas, which first made waves in December 2010, was initially scheduled for an “amplification” project in 2019, aimed at enhancing the ship before its 2020 Mediterranean summer program. However, the pandemic’s onset put a halt to these plans, leaving the ship’s anticipated upgrades in limbo.

Now, with a renewed focus on modernization, Royal Caribbean is poised to proceed with the extensive refurbishment. The project involves a 58-day drydock period slated for early 2025, with an estimated cost of $165 million. This effort is part of the broader “Royal Amplification” initiative, a $1 billion modernization drive Royal Caribbean launched in 2018 to revamp its fleet.

During the earnings call, Liberty highlighted the company’s commitment to fleet modernization, stating, “We are always modernizing [our fleet]. We have Allure coming up, and the actions we took on Oasis and some of the learnings on Icon are going to be on that modernization.” He further emphasized the importance of staying competitive and relevant, noting that the investment would also address sustainability enhancements alongside guest experience improvements.

Although Royal Caribbean has not officially confirmed the exact timing of the drydock period, Cruise Industry News reports that the overhaul is expected to occur during a scheduled drydock in early 2025. This long-awaited project aims to breathe new life into the Allure of the Seas, ensuring it continues to offer guests the innovative and luxurious experiences Royal Caribbean is known for.

This revitalization underscores Royal Caribbean’s dedication to its fleet’s excellence and sustainability, promising an even more compelling and environmentally conscious cruising experience for its passengers.
