Wizz Air, the Switzerland-based budget airline, has announced plans to launch a state-of-the-art pilot training center near Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. With a strategic location adjacent to Terminal One, the new facility represents a significant investment of approximately $40.95 million into the aviation sector. Spanning 2500 m2, the center aims to offer recurrent training to more than 4,800 pilots annually, reflecting Wizz Air’s commitment to safety, excellence, and job creation in Italy.

Designed to enhance the skills of Wizz Air’s pilots, the center will feature three advanced full-flight Airbus A320 family simulators within a 600 m2 simulator hall. Additionally, it will house briefing rooms and spaces dedicated to theoretical training across two floors, covering 1290 m2. This setup ensures that each simulator can accommodate up to 135 pilots every month, facilitating ongoing training for a vast number of pilots each year.

The new center is scheduled to commence theoretical training sessions in May 2024, with the full installation of simulators by year-end. This initiative not only underscores Wizz Air’s dedication to maintaining the highest training standards but also contributes to the Italian economy by creating direct local employment opportunities. Wizz Air’s President, Robert Carey, highlighted the investment as a testament to the airline’s focus on nurturing its workforce and reinforcing its operational presence in Italy, where it already employs 1,000 individuals.

Marking Wizz Air’s second global training facility, following its Budapest center opened five years prior, this development is poised to play a crucial role in the airline’s growth and the professional development of its pilots. The training undertaken at the center will add to the collective experience of Wizz Air pilots, who have amassed over 83,000 flight hours, equivalent to more than nine years of flying time on three simulators.
