Lufthansa Group’s newly established City Airlines is set to commence operations in the Summer 2024 season, embarking on an ambitious launch with a mix of domestic and international routes from its Munich base. This strategic move aims to enhance connectivity and provide passengers with a broader range of travel options. The initial lineup includes six domestic destinations: Berlin Brandenburg International, Hamburg Helmut Schmidt, Bremen Hans Koschnick, Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, and Hanover. The airline will also connect Munich with three international cities: Birmingham, Bordeaux Mérignac, and Manchester International. This launch marks the beginning of a phased network expansion, promising further growth in the months following its inauguration.

While the specific commencement date remains under wraps, Lufthansa Group has indicated that ticket sales for City Airlines flights will kick off at the end of April 2024, signaling an imminent launch. The anticipation for this new venture grows as the airline finalizes its preparation, including the scheduling and operational details yet to be disclosed.

City Airlines is gearing up for its debut with an initial fleet of four A319-100 aircraft, sourced from sister carriers within the Lufthansa Group. The aircraft, including two units already donning the City Airlines livery and undergoing maintenance in Munich, are set to spearhead the airline’s operations. Plans for fleet expansion are already on the horizon, with additional narrowbodies expected in 2025 and the introduction of forty A220-300s slated for 2026.

Functioning as a technical capacity provider, City Airlines will play a pivotal role in supporting Lufthansa’s network, particularly focusing on feeding the Munich hub with an eye on expanding to Frankfurt International in 2025. The airline’s certification in June 2023 laid the groundwork for its upcoming launch, though labor negotiations have previously influenced the timing of its operational debut.

City Airlines’ strategic positioning within the Lufthansa Group’s portfolio, alongside Lufthansa CityLine, underscores a concerted effort to optimize hub connectivity and leverage Munich’s strategic importance. As City Airlines prepares to take to the skies, its launch is keenly anticipated by travelers and industry observers alike, promising a new era of travel options and connectivity from one of Europe’s leading aviation hubs.
