U.S. Airlines Ramp Up Pilot Recruitment Efforts in 2023 Amidst Ongoing Shortages

In the wake of global pilot shortages, U.S. airlines have intensified their recruitment efforts throughout 2023 to bolster their ranks with new and experienced pilots. Despite these proactive measures, many U.S. carriers continued to face staffing challenges as of early last year, underscoring the industry’s perpetual demand for more pilots. U.S. airlines have employed various strategies to increase their pilot workforce, including leveraging social media and collaborating with career advisory groups like Future & Active Pilot Advisors (FAPA). Since its inception in 1972, FAPA has facilitated connections between pilots at different career stages and airlines actively seeking new hires. The organization primarily collaborates with major U.S. airlines such as Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and others, guiding aspiring pilots towards these carriers based on their qualifications and experience.

FAPA’s data for 2023 reveals a remarkable total of 12,193 pilots hired across 13 airlines, with Delta Air Lines leading the charge by recruiting 2,424 pilots. January emerged as the most prolific month for Delta, marking a significant effort to address its post-pandemic pilot shortages. Contrastingly, FedEx, grappling with an oversupply of pilots, hired only two pilots throughout the year.

Other notable carriers like United Airlines and American Airlines also showcased aggressive hiring policies, with United recruiting 2,349 pilots and experiencing a surge in October, and American adding 2,211 pilots with May being its peak hiring month. Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue Airways hired 379 and 498 pilots, respectively, indicating varied levels of recruitment activity among different airlines.
