Thornton Aviation, a Part 145 repair station based in Van Nuys, California, has distinguished itself as the first MRO provider on the West Coast to successfully install a SpaceX Starlink satellite communications system in a Gulfstream G650. The aircraft, operated by a local charter management company, marks a significant advancement in connectivity solutions for aviation.

Vince Russo, the Director of Avionics at Thornton Aviation, highlighted the growing demand for high-tech upgrades in the sector. Following the successful installation on the G650, the company is already progressing with similar installations on a second G650, with a third planned for June. Additionally, Thornton has recently completed Starlink installations on two G550s and a Bombardier Global Express, all utilizing Nextant Aerospace supplemental type certificates.

The Starlink system, noted for its lightweight design at just 48 pounds, was installed over a three-week period, showcasing Thornton Aviation’s capability to efficiently handle complex projects. “In the past six months, we’ve performed more than 20 installation projects ranging from small cockpit USB upgrades to full-blown cabin management systems,” said Russo. “We work on all models from the Citation CJs to the large-cabin Gulfstreams, Bombardiers, and everything in between.”

Thornton Aviation’s comprehensive service offerings and commitment to quality have made it a preferred choice for operators seeking diverse avionic solutions. The company employs over a dozen technicians in its avionics shop and is an authorized dealer for multiple leading equipment manufacturers including Alto, Collins, Garmin, Gogo, Honeywell, SmartSky, Starlink, Universal Avionics, and Viasat.

Recent projects at Thornton Aviation also include the upgrade of three King Airs with Gogo Avance L5 air-to-ground connectivity systems. These systems are also provisioned for the upcoming Gogo 5G service, expected to roll out later this year, further enhancing the connectivity options available to Thornton’s clients.

Thornton Aviation continues to lead the way in integrating cutting-edge technology into aviation, ensuring aircraft are equipped with the latest advancements in satellite communications and connectivity. This strategic focus not only enhances the functionality and performance of the aircraft but also significantly improves the overall flight experience for passengers and crew.
