Gridiron Air Receives Approval for Expanded Charter Operations from US DOT

Gridiron Air (RZN, Fort Worth Alliance), known for its specialized charter services for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, has received tentative approval from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to expand its operations. This decision allows the carrier to conduct interstate and international charter flights, carrying both passengers and cargo. The authorization includes the use of B777-200ER aircraft, marking a significant step in the airline’s expansion plans.

Currently operating under a Part 125 certificate, Gridiron Air uses a B777-200ER, registered as N860DA (msn 29951), for its charter operations. This certification typically covers non-common carriage flights on aircraft configured for 20 or more passengers, or with a maximum payload capacity of 6,000 pounds or more.

Looking to broaden its service offerings, Gridiron Air is transitioning towards a Part 121 certificate, which will enable it to provide chartered services to a wider array of sports teams and other clients across the United States, as well as to destinations in Canada and Mexico. The airline plans to expand its fleet to include up to four B777 aircraft, starting its Part 121 operations with another B777-200ER, N865DA (msn 29737). This aircraft, a former Delta Air Lines widebody, is currently stored at Fort Worth Alliance airport, having been transferred from Marana on May 19, as per ADS-B data.

The DOT has noted that Gridiron Air is making acceptable progress in its Part 121 certification process, a crucial step towards finalizing its expanded operational capabilities. The airline, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delaware-based Gridiron Ventures, is led by President and CEO Paul Kirby, with Michael J Bidwill, former vice president for the Arizona Cardinals, serving as a director.
