United Airlines Enhances Basic Economy Check-In Process

United Airlines has announced a significant update to its basic economy service, streamlining the check-in process for passengers. Starting August 6, travelers holding basic economy tickets will be able to check in using the United app, United.com, or airport kiosks, according to information provided to Travel + Leisure.

Previously, basic economy passengers were required to check in at the airport in person. This policy was in place to ensure that travelers did not bring a carry-on bag, as United’s basic economy fares do not include one. The airline now plans to manage this by requiring passengers who check in online to place a credit card on file. A $65 charge will be applied if they attempt to bring a carry-on bag to the gate, allowing United to automatically process the fee post-departure.

Passengers will also need to specify the number of bags they are bringing during the online check-in process. This update comes after a successful trial at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, where United observed a decrease in the number of bags checked at the gate and received positive feedback from travelers.

While this new policy is being implemented, United notes that there may be a need for temporary overrides at airport kiosks for several weeks. Additionally, although basic economy tickets still come with baggage charges, United provides options for passengers needing to change their flights. Travelers can upgrade to a standard economy ticket, which does not incur change fees, or cancel their flight for a fee.

This change by United is part of a broader trend among airlines adjusting their basic economy offerings. For instance, starting in September, JetBlue will include a carry-on bag with its basic economy fares, marking a shift in how airlines are addressing the needs and preferences of budget-conscious travelers.
