EL AL Israel Airlines finalized an agreement on for the purchase of up to 31 Boeing 737 Max jets on Aug. 15, marking a major step forward in the airline’s ongoing fleet renewal program. This move supports EL AL’s strategic goal of upgrading its Next-Generation 737 airplanes with the latest in aviation technology.

“This is a significant milestone for EL AL, which will allow us to offer our customers the most advanced service and technology experience in the industry,” said Dina Ben-Tal Ganancia, CEO of EL AL Israel Airlines. “The implementation of our long-term procurement plan, which began with the purchase of additional 787 Dreamliners earlier this year and culminates in the current deal, demonstrates our commitment to the Israeli public and the state.”

The acquisition of these 737 Max jets is a critical component of EL AL’s strategic plan, which aims to expand its fleet, enhance its value proposition for customers, and increase overall capacity. This investment ensures that EL AL will remain a strong and growing airline well into the future.

The Boeing 737 Max family will offer EL AL industry-leading per-seat economics, enhanced environmental performance, and improved passenger comfort. Specifically, the 737 Max reduces fuel consumption and emissions by 20% compared to the airplanes it replaces, while also boasting a 50% smaller noise footprint.

“We are honored EL AL has chosen Boeing airplanes to power its past, present, and future as we continue to build on seven decades of partnership,” said Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We know EL AL depends on the versatility and reliability of Boeing airplanes, and we look forward to delivering the 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner jets that will reshape and grow the airline in the coming decades.”

EL AL’s decision to order more 737 Max jets follows the airline’s earlier purchase of three additional 787-9 Dreamliners, with options for six more. These new Dreamliners will complement the existing fleet and bolster the airline’s long-haul capacity. EL AL is set to take delivery of a new 787-9 this year and plans to receive two additional 787-9 aircraft on lease in the coming years.

This fleet expansion positions EL AL to offer its passengers a more modern, efficient, and comfortable flying experience while also advancing the airline’s environmental goals. As the airline continues to grow and modernize, it reinforces its central role in maintaining open skies for Israel and supporting the country’s connectivity with the rest of the world.
