Norwegian Cruise Line Introduces Sustainable Serveware for In-Room Breakfasts

Norwegian Cruise Line is set to revolutionize its in-room breakfast service by introducing reusable serveware made from 50 percent recycled materials. This new initiative is being launched on the Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva and is expected to be extended across the entire 19-ship fleet by the end of the year.

This eco-conscious shift comes from a collaboration with Drinique, a Phoenix-based manufacturer known for its sustainable serveware solutions. Guests aboard Norwegian Cruise Line will now enjoy their morning meals in lightweight bento box-style containers, designed to replace the traditional and bulkier porcelain plates, and to eliminate the need for plastic cling wrap. This change not only enhances the guest experience but also aligns with the cruise line’s ongoing environmental efforts.

The new serveware is crafted from Eastman Tritan Renew, a durable type of plastic recognized for its role in reducing landfill waste by incorporating recycled materials in its composition. This initiative is part of Norwegian’s broader commitment to sustainability, which has already seen the elimination of over 77 million single-use plastic straws and 27 million single-use plastic water bottles since 2018.

Mark Kansley, Senior Vice President of Hotel Operations at Norwegian Cruise Line, emphasized the company’s dedication to environmental stewardship, stating, “As part of our commitment to reduce the use of single-use plastics on board, we continuously explore new environmentally friendly practices. Our mission is to enhance guest experiences while ensuring that we contribute positively to the environment.”

Kansley also expressed enthusiasm about the ongoing partnership with Drinique, highlighting the strategic alignment in values between the two companies. “We’re excited to expand the use of these innovative reusable bento boxes across our fleet. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to protect and preserve the environment while enhancing the overall guest experience,” he added.

By integrating these sustainable practices, Norwegian Cruise Line continues to lead by example in the cruise industry, proving that operational excellence can go hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility.
