Dallas DFW Begins $3 Billion Overhaul of Terminal C
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), the world’s third-busiest passenger airport, has initiated a major $3 billion redevelopment project for its Terminal C. The overhaul aims to modernize and expand the terminal, which is the busiest of the five terminals at American Airlines’ primary hub.
Scheduled to be fully operational by 2030, the Terminal C rebuild is part of a larger $9 billion initiative called “DFW Forward”. This extensive project includes 180 upgrades across the airport’s airfield, terminals, and roadways. The overhaul will transform Terminal C, which DFW describes as the airport’s “most outdated terminal,” into a modern, spacious facility. Key features of the redevelopment include the removal of over 400 view-blocking columns, the installation of dynamic glass windows, and an overall elevation of the terminal’s roof.
Enhancements and Expansions
The revamped Terminal C will offer enhanced amenities, including new shops, restaurants, lounges, check-in areas, security checkpoints, and improved restrooms. Alongside the Terminal C redevelopment, the first phase of the project involves pier expansions for both Terminal C and Terminal A. Terminal C will gain four new gates, while Terminal A will add five. The expansions will increase the total gate count at DFW by nine.
The Terminal C expansion will cover 115,000 square feet, while the Terminal A pier expansion will span 140,000 square feet. Following the first phase, much of the existing Terminal C will be demolished to make way for further reconstruction in subsequent phases.
Impact on Airport Capacity and Passenger Experience
DFW handled 81.8 million passengers in 2023, reflecting an 11.7% increase year-over-year. It is surpassed only by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Dubai International Airport in terms of passenger traffic. The ongoing redevelopment is set to enhance passenger experience and accommodate future growth as DFW edges closer to serving 100 million passengers annually.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson praised the project, calling the new Terminal C a “monumental expansion” that will enhance the city’s connectivity and boost its global standing. The redevelopment is expected to provide a more dynamic and efficient travel experience, benefiting both domestic and international travelers.
Leadership and Future Developments
The Terminal C project is being led by a joint venture of Texas-based firms Austin Commercial, Azteca Enterprises, and Alpha & Omega. Alongside the Terminal C and A pier expansions, plans include the development of a new Terminal F with 15 gates, projected for completion in 2027 at a cost of $1.6 billion.
DFW CEO Sean Donohue emphasized that the $9 billion capital improvement program will “reimagine the customer experience” and support the anticipated increase in air travel. He acknowledged the complexities and challenges ahead, stating that the project is crucial for accommodating future growth and maintaining DFW’s position as a leading global airport hub.
The Terminal C redevelopment and broader improvements under the DFW Forward program reflect a significant investment in the airport’s infrastructure, aimed at enhancing passenger experiences and supporting the continued growth of North Texas’s aviation sector.
