Bangkok Airways is set to invest THB2.3 billion ($69 million) to significantly expand its key hubs at Koh Samui (USM) and Trat (TDX) airports. This strategic investment underscores the airline’s commitment to enhancing its regional presence and supporting future growth.

According to Bangkok Airways President Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, THB1.5 billion of the total investment will be dedicated to the expansion of Koh Samui Airport, the airline’s flagship hub. The planned upgrades include increasing the number of gates from seven to eleven, installing ten new check-in counters, and expanding the commercial area from 1,800 m² to 4,000 m². These enhancements are aimed at improving passenger experience and operational efficiency. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2025 and is expected to be completed by 2027.

Currently, Koh Samui Airport handles approximately 2 million passengers annually. Bangkok Airways anticipates that this number will double by 2027, making Koh Samui a critical contributor to 60% of the airline’s total revenue. The expansion will enable the airport to accommodate the growing number of travelers and enhance its capacity to serve as a major gateway for tourists visiting the picturesque island of Koh Samui.

In addition to the Koh Samui expansion, Bangkok Airways will allocate THB800 million to extend the runway at Trat Airport. The runway will be lengthened from 1,800 meters to 2,100 meters, allowing Trat Airport to accommodate jet-powered airliners. This upgrade will enable the airport to handle larger aircraft, thereby increasing flight frequency and expanding the range of destinations served. Enhanced runway capabilities will also support the airline’s fleet growth and improve connectivity for travelers in the Trat region.

To support its expansion plans, Bangkok Airways will be adding two new Airbus A319 aircraft by the end of the year. This addition will bolster the airline’s fleet, enabling it to meet the increasing demand for flights and ensuring that Bangkok Airways can provide reliable and efficient service to its expanding customer base.

Bangkok Airways currently operates a diverse fleet consisting of two Airbus A320s, ten Airbus A319s, and ten ATR72-600s. The addition of the new Airbus A319s will enhance the airline’s operational flexibility and capacity, allowing it to better serve both domestic and international routes. This fleet expansion is part of Bangkok Airways’ broader strategy to strengthen its market position and cater to the evolving needs of its passengers.

Data from CAPA – Centre for Aviation and OAG Schedules Analyser reveals that 83.8% of seats at Koh Samui Airport are allocated to domestic flights. The introduction of Scoot’s Embraer 190-E2 flights between Singapore and Koh Samui in May 2024 has significantly boosted the international segment, adding 3,360 weekly seats. This development marks the largest increase in international capacity from the resort island, further enhancing Koh Samui’s appeal as a top travel destination.

Bangkok Airways’ investment in Koh Samui and Trat airports is a testament to the airline’s dedication to improving infrastructure and expanding its reach within the region. By enhancing airport facilities and expanding its fleet, Bangkok Airways aims to provide a superior travel experience for its passengers while supporting the growth of tourism in Thailand.

The airline’s proactive approach to airport expansion and fleet enhancement positions Bangkok Airways for sustained growth in the competitive aviation market. As Bangkok Airways continues to invest in key infrastructure projects, it reinforces its role as a leading regional carrier, committed to delivering exceptional service and expanding connectivity for travelers across Thailand and beyond.
