Airline and Airport News: American Airlines, Japan’s Zipair, Ethiopian Airlines and more

American Airlines has requested an extension for its U.S.-China dormancy waiver from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The airline plans to suspend 14 of its frequencies between the U.S. and China for the winter 2024-25 season. Currently, American operates seven weekly frequencies between Dallas-Fort Worth and Shanghai Pudong. Additionally, the airline is seeking temporary waivers for four U.S.-Cuba routes, including Miami to Havana (3x weekly), Santa Clara (daily), Santiago de Cuba (2x weekly), and Varadero (2x weekly).

Greater Bay Airlines (GBA) is expanding its services from Hong Kong to Japan, converting charter flights to scheduled routes. Direct flights to Tokushima will start on Nov. 16, followed by Sendai on Dec. 7. The carrier aims to provide more convenient travel options for passengers without the need for transfers via major cities like Osaka or Tokyo.

Japan’s Zipair will increase frequencies between Tokyo Narita and Vancouver from four to five flights per week beginning March 9, 2025, in response to rising demand.

Ethiopian Airlines is expanding its service between Addis Ababa and Rome Fiumicino, increasing flights from seven to 10 per week starting Dec. 1. The announcement was made during the celebration of Ethiopian’s 60 years of service to the Italian capital, highlighting its commitment to strengthening ties between Africa and Europe.

Shenzhen Airlines is launching a new route between Shenzhen and Doha, Qatar, starting Oct. 29. The service will operate three times weekly using Airbus A330-300 aircraft, offering the only nonstop connection between the two cities.
