Vienna Airport Expands Routes and Upgrades Infrastructure
Vienna International Airport (VIE) is continuing its recovery with new air services and major infrastructure upgrades. In 2023, the airport welcomed 29.5 million passengers and added 34 new or returning routes, strengthening its network of 203 destinations served by 65 airlines.
Belina Neumann, vice president for aviation development at VIE, highlighted the airport’s impressive growth over the past year. New long-haul routes to Boston with Austrian Airlines, Tokyo Haneda with ANA, and Shenzhen with Hainan Airlines have expanded its reach. European cities like Manchester, Birmingham, Bremen, and Rovaniemi have also joined the network, reinforcing VIE’s status as a leading connecting hub.
The summer of 2024 marked VIE’s busiest months ever, with record-breaking passenger numbers in June, July, and August. Neumann attributes this success to strong airline partnerships and a strategic focus on high-potential markets like China, Saudi Arabia, India, and North America.
To drive further growth, VIE is collaborating with local tourist boards and promoting Vienna through roadshows and events. The airport also supports airlines by providing data analysis to encourage the launch of new routes to Vienna.
In addition to route expansion, VIE is investing in infrastructure upgrades to meet rising demand. A major terminal extension, scheduled for completion by 2027, will add 70,000 m² of new space, enhancing capacity and improving the passenger experience with state-of-the-art facilities. Sustainability is a priority, with 50% of the airport’s electricity already generated from photovoltaic plants and plans to exceed climate goals before 2030.
VIE is also advancing its digital services with biometric check-in, mobile flight information, and autonomous wheelchairs for passengers with reduced mobility, ensuring a seamless and innovative travel experience.
