Bahrain Airport Set for Growth with New Infrastructure Plans
Bahrain International Airport (BAH) is on track to nearly return to pre-pandemic passenger levels, with a forecast of 9.6 million travelers by the end of 2024, according to CEO Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah. This anticipated resurgence signifies the strength and resilience of Bahrain’s aviation sector, which has adapted to the ongoing global challenges that have affected air travel.
Al Binfalah, in a recent interview with Aviation Week, emphasized that the airport’s recovery is aligned with Bahrain’s national air connectivity plan. This strategic initiative aims to expand BAH’s network to 100 destinations over the next four to five years, significantly enhancing connectivity with key regions including North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. This growth strategy is crucial for bolstering Bahrain’s position as a regional aviation hub.
To support this anticipated increase in passenger traffic, Bahrain International Airport has undergone substantial upgrades, including the construction of a state-of-the-art new terminal. This terminal has received a prestigious five-star rating from Skytrax and is designed to accommodate up to 14 million passengers annually. Alongside physical enhancements, the Bahrain Airport Company is also investing in advanced technologies aimed at improving passenger processes. Initiatives such as single-token systems and self-service kiosks are being implemented to enhance capacity and streamline the overall passenger experience.
As BAH approaches its operational capacity, the kingdom is exploring the development of an ambitious new project—a $10 billion greenfield airport located on a reclaimed island to the north of the current facility. This innovative project is necessary due to the existing airport’s spatial limitations, which restrict future expansions.
The proposed greenfield airport will necessitate significant infrastructure development, including extensive dredging and the construction of a bridge or causeway to connect the new airport to the rest of Bahrain. Furthermore, a comprehensive road and rail system will be established to ensure seamless connectivity between the airport and the mainland, providing travelers with efficient access to the new facility.
Netherlands Airport Consultants has been awarded the contract to assess the feasibility of the greenfield airport project. Their study will cover essential aspects, including public policy implications, development strategies, and technical, economic, financial, and regulatory considerations.
Al Binfalah expressed optimism about the future of Bahrain’s aviation industry, stating, “The kingdom is looking forward.” The feasibility study is currently underway, with results expected by the end of the year or early next year. He noted the urgency of this project, mentioning that the existing airport operates with a single runway and will eventually reach its capacity limits. A new greenfield airport is seen as vital for ensuring Bahrain’s long-term growth and sustainability in air travel.
With these strategic investments and developments, Bahrain International Airport is poised to strengthen its role in global aviation, welcoming travelers from around the world and enhancing the nation’s connectivity and economic prospects. As the airport prepares for a significant influx of passengers, these improvements will be crucial in maintaining high service standards and operational efficiency.
