Routes World, the global event that unites decision-makers from airlines, airports, and destinations to shape the future of air routes, will be hosted by Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) from September 24-26, 2025. Following the close of the 2024 event in Bahrain, HKIA received the hosting duties for the prestigious event, with the support of the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

HKIA, a leading aviation hub, has experienced strong passenger growth in 2024, handling 4.92 million passengers and 31,605 flight movements in August alone. These figures represent a year-on-year increase of 23.0% and 26.1%, respectively. Looking ahead, HKIA’s continued infrastructure investments aim to accommodate over 120 million passengers annually by 2035, solidifying its position as one of the busiest airports worldwide.

The airport currently serves around 220 destinations globally, with 120 airlines connecting it to major hubs, including nearly 50 destinations in Mainland China. HKIA also holds the title of the world’s busiest cargo airport, further showcasing its importance in global aviation.

As part of its long-term vision, HKIA is undergoing a transformation into an “Airport City,” which will go beyond its core passenger and cargo services. The project includes developing multimodal regional connectivity, retail, hospitality, conference and exhibition centers, entertainment facilities, a marina, and office complexes. This comprehensive expansion is designed to make HKIA a destination in itself, fostering regional business growth and technological innovation.

Routes World has proven instrumental in shaping the world’s air services, with over half of the new routes worldwide connected to meetings held at the event. The 2025 edition is expected to attract top decision-makers, including VPs and Heads of Network Planning from 260 airlines. The event provides a platform for industry professionals to discuss route development, strengthen partnerships, and explore new opportunities in the aviation industry.

During the handover ceremony, Steven Small, Director of Routes, emphasized the significance of Hong Kong’s strategic location. “With half the world’s population within a five-hour flight, Hong Kong is where East meets West. To cater for the city’s long-term air traffic demand, HKIA is developing into a three-runway system, set to be completed by the end of this year. Routes World 2025 will be the perfect platform for HKIA to showcase this investment.”

Vivian Cheung, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong, expressed her excitement for hosting the upcoming event. “It is with great honor and anticipation that HKIA carries forward the mission and prepares for hosting Routes World in September 2025, in our beautiful city of Hong Kong. Routes World 2025 will provide unparalleled opportunities for industry professionals to come together, witness firsthand the various advancements at HKIA, and experience the unique blend of Eastern and Western cultures that define our city.”

As HKIA continues to evolve into a premier global aviation hub, Routes World 2025 will serve as a prime opportunity for the airport to showcase its advancements and future potential.
