Marriott Launches City Express Brand in U.S. and Canada

Marriott International is expanding its portfolio with the introduction of City Express by Marriott in the U.S. and Canada. This initiative marks the company’s entry into the transient midscale segment, providing relevant lodging options tailored for various trip purposes and price points.

Diana Plazas-Trowbridge, Senior Vice President and Global Brand Leader for Select Brands, noted, “Since entering the affordable midscale space with the acquisition of City Express in the Caribbean and Latin America (CALA) region just over a year ago, we have seen tremendous interest for the brand and are pleased with its growth across the region.” She expressed excitement about extending this growth in the U.S. and Canada, aiming to offer a welcoming, affordable, and reliable option for value-conscious travelers.

In May 2023, Marriott announced the acquisition of the City Express brand portfolio in CALA, which marked its entry into the affordable midscale segment. This deal added over 17,000 rooms across Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Chile, increasing Marriott’s footprint in the region by approximately 45 percent.

Since the acquisition, both consumer and owner interest have driven the brand’s growth, leading to expansion plans beyond the original markets to new locations such as Bolivia and Nicaragua. Additionally, Marriott has revealed plans to expand City Express by Marriott in Brazil.

Noah Silverman, Global Development Officer for U.S. and Canada, emphasized Marriott’s commitment to providing best-in-class offerings and investment opportunities for development stakeholders. He stated, “The initial reaction to our midscale products has been extremely positive,” highlighting the brand’s potential.

Designed for conversion-friendly opportunities, City Express by Marriott allows for future new builds while offering a light operational model and functional modern design. This approach positions owners in the U.S. and Canada to capitalize on growing consumer demand while leveraging Marriott’s robust sales, distribution, and marketing capabilities.
