Air Canada Pilots Approve 42% Wage Increase Over 4 Years

Air Canada pilots have approved a new contract with a nearly 42% wage increase over four years, potentially avoiding strikes and resolving a contentious period for the airline. On October 10, 2024, Air Canada and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) confirmed that pilots ratified the deal, which includes significant pay raises and quality-of-life improvements.

The vote covers over 5,200 pilots at Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, with 67% of the pilots voting in favor of the agreement. The new four-year contract is the largest in the airline’s history and takes effect immediately, addressing the absence of a collective agreement since September 30, 2023. The contract will expire on September 29, 2027.

First Officer Charlene Hudy, Chair of Air Canada ALPA’s Master Executive Council, emphasized that the deal helps restore pilots’ earnings lost over the past two decades and creates a solid foundation for future growth. She added that the new pay rates and working conditions will enhance pilots’ ability to connect passengers worldwide.

The agreement includes a ratification payment and improved pay scales, where newer recruits will earn between CA$75,700 ($55,000) and CA$134,000 ($97,000), with experienced captains earning up to CA$367,000 ($267,000) annually.

Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau expressed satisfaction with the deal, noting that it balances the needs of the pilots while providing the company with flexibility for future growth.
