Could Digital Passports Be the Future of Travel in 2024?

Share

Imagine traveling without a physical passport. In 2024, this may soon become a reality as travel processes become increasingly high-tech. With fingerprint scanning at Eurostar and passport-free boarding trials at select airports, the European Commission is now proposing a digital solution for travelers entering or exiting the Schengen area, which saw 600 million crossings last year.

The proposal includes creating digital travel credentials, essentially an online version of your passport. These credentials would be stored in a new ‘EU Digital Travel’ app, offering a convenient and secure way to manage your travel documents.

This digital passport aims to streamline border controls and improve security by making it harder to counterfeit documents. The system would make border checks faster and more efficient for both authorities and travelers. The best part? Opting for a digital passport would be completely voluntary and free of charge.

Travelers can choose whether to digitize their passport, but those who prefer the traditional method can stick to their physical documents.

While the concept sounds futuristic, it’s still in the proposal stage. The framework and app will be developed once the EU Council and European Parliament approve the initiative. Until then, stay tuned as digital passports may soon change the way we travel, making journeys smoother and more secure across Europe.
