Scotland Targets High-Yield Markets to Boost Tourism Growth
Scotland is honing its focus on North America and high-yield markets from China, the Middle East, and India to propel tourism growth, following a record-breaking year in 2023. Denise Hill, VisitScotland’s head of business development and intermediary marketing, reported that international visitor numbers soared to nearly 4 million last year, surpassing both visits and spending levels of 2019. Notably, North American travelers, who make up nearly 25% of international visits, have been instrumental in driving this resurgence.
The connectivity between Scotland and North America has been enhanced by several new and resumed flights, including WestJet’s routes from Halifax and Toronto to Edinburgh, JetBlue Airways’ service from New York John F. Kennedy, and American Airlines’ upcoming 2025 resumption of flights from Philadelphia to Edinburgh. These connections underscore North America’s role as a pivotal market for Scotland’s tourism sector.
Europe remains a strong contributor to Scotland’s tourism, with the number of visitors from Germany and France rebounding above pre-pandemic figures. The interest from Italy and Spain has also seen a significant increase. Additionally, Emirates is set to resume its service from Dubai to Edinburgh this winter, supplementing its daily flights to Glasgow.
Scotland is strategically positioning itself as a leader in responsible tourism for the 21st century, responding to the increasing demand for meaningful travel experiences, particularly from U.S. travelers. Partnerships with the Tourism Cares Meaningful Travel program and collaborations with U.S. tour operator TTC are initiatives aimed at helping Scottish tourism enterprises develop climate action plans.
Moreover, Scotland is intensifying efforts to attract high-yield travelers who seek authentic, immersive experiences. This strategy includes enhancing support for small and medium-sized enterprises and micro-businesses. The focus on affluent markets in China, the Middle East, and India is expected to further diversify and enrich Scotland’s tourism offerings, driving substantial economic benefits.
