Qantas Expects No Customer Impact from Planned Engineers’ Strike
Qantas Airways announced on Friday that it does not anticipate disruptions to customer services due to an ongoing strike by some of its engineering workforce. The strike, led by the Qantas Engineers’ Alliance—which includes the Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union (AMWU), the Australian Workers’ Union, and the Electrical Trades Union—began in late September. The Alliance is advocating for a 5% annual pay increase and an additional 15% one-time payment for the first year.
The union representatives expressed frustration over what they describe as stalled negotiations, urging Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson to secure a fair agreement that supports the engineers who contribute to the airline’s high safety standards. “The workers who uphold Qantas’s world-class safety record deserve fair pay,” stated AMWU National Secretary Steve Murphy, calling for urgent action to resolve the pay dispute.
Qantas emphasized its commitment to finding a resolution and highlighted that it had engaged in multiple meetings with union representatives before the strike began. “We’re prepared to continue discussions to reach a fair solution, but they have opted for industrial action,” a Qantas spokesperson said in a statement.
The airline has assured customers that flights and services will remain unaffected despite the industrial action. As Qantas navigates these labor negotiations, it remains focused on maintaining its operational reliability and customer satisfaction, particularly as it heads into the peak travel season and prepares for its annual general meeting.
