Viking Orders Two New Cruise Ships from Fincantieri
Viking has announced an exciting expansion of its fleet by ordering two new cruise ships from Fincantieri, one of the world’s leading shipbuilders. This contract includes an option for Viking to construct four additional vessels in the future, signaling a strong commitment to growth in the cruise industry.
The signed contracts outline the completion of the two new ships by 2030, with the potential for the four optional vessels to be delivered in 2031 and 2032. Each of these modern cruise ships will feature 499 cabins, allowing them to accommodate up to 998 passengers comfortably. With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons, these vessels are designed to enhance Viking’s reputation for high-quality, innovative cruising experiences.
Viking and Fincantieri have established a robust partnership since 2012, during which time Fincantieri has successfully constructed a total of 22 ships for Viking. This includes two purpose-built expedition ships, showcasing the shipbuilder’s versatility and expertise in crafting specialized vessels for various cruising purposes.
Pierroberto Folgiero, the chief executive officer and managing director of Fincantieri, expressed enthusiasm about the new order, stating, “This new order represents another step forward in our collaboration with Viking, further consolidating Fincantieri as a global leader in naval engineering innovation.” Folgiero highlighted that this agreement not only enhances Fincantieri’s order book but also ensures sustained work within its shipyards for the long term.
The expansion aligns with Fincantieri’s commitment to advancing the cruise industry towards energy transition and sustainable practices. Folgiero emphasized the company’s dedication to integrating cutting-edge technologies into their designs, reflecting the evolving climate challenges and opportunities within the cruise sector. “Our ability to integrate cutting-edge technologies is a testament to our commitment to building ships for tomorrow,” he added, underlining the significance of aligning with the cruise industry’s environmental goals.
This new order comes at a time when the cruise industry is rebounding from the challenges posed by the pandemic, with many companies seeking to refresh and expand their fleets to meet growing demand for unique travel experiences. Viking’s latest investment in new vessels not only signals confidence in the market but also positions the company to offer enhanced experiences for its passengers in the coming years.
As Viking continues to innovate and expand its offerings, the collaboration with Fincantieri is expected to yield vessels that prioritize both passenger comfort and environmental sustainability. With the new ships set to join the fleet in the coming years, Viking aims to strengthen its position as a leader in the premium cruise market.
The addition of these new ships reflects Viking’s ongoing commitment to providing exceptional cruise experiences while addressing the industry’s need for sustainable practices. As the cruise market evolves, partnerships like that of Viking and Fincantieri are essential for driving innovation and meeting the expectations of modern travelers.
As Viking looks ahead to the future, the strategic order of these two new cruise ships marks a significant milestone in its journey, paving the way for continued growth and success in the dynamic world of cruise travel.
