Etihad Airways Sees 35% Growth and Plans Major Route Expansion
Etihad Airways has reported robust traffic growth for the first three quarters of 2024, underscoring its expanding network and setting the stage for major route announcements in the months ahead. The Abu Dhabi-based airline carried 13.6 million passengers from January to September, marking a 35% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Over the 12 months ending in September, Etihad saw a 75% rise, carrying 17.5 million passengers, a significant jump from the 10 million passengers in the prior year—a clear sign of Etihad’s accelerated growth trajectory.
CEO Antonoaldo Neves emphasized the carrier’s “continuing upwards momentum,” noting that load factors have held steady, indicating a sustained demand for Etihad’s services. In September 2024, Etihad achieved an 88% load factor, a slight increase from 87% in September 2023, reflecting strong passenger engagement as the airline expanded its offerings.
The airline’s destination map has also grown, with Etihad serving 76 destinations as of September, up from 68 a year earlier. This expansion has been supported by an increase in fleet size, with Etihad operating 95 aircraft, adding 16 new planes since September 2023. Neves attributes the route and fleet expansion to Abu Dhabi’s growing prominence as a global aviation hub, which he says is positioning Etihad as a key player in connecting travelers worldwide.
Etihad’s fleet growth supports the carrier’s ability to add new routes, which remains central to its strategy. At Routes World 2024 in Bahrain, Etihad’s chief revenue and commercial officer, Arik De, disclosed that the airline has ambitious plans to introduce multiple new routes in the coming months. De announced that 11 new routes will be revealed on November 25, with an additional 20 expected to launch within the first two months of 2025. “We are growing at 40% each year,” De noted, underscoring the rapid pace at which the airline is expanding its network to meet rising demand.
Etihad’s strategic focus on growth comes as the airline leverages Abu Dhabi’s position in the Middle East as a connecting hub for Europe, Asia, and Africa.
