Japan Airlines Partners with Lime to Enhance Sustainable Travel

Japan Airlines has announced an innovative partnership with Lime, a shared electric vehicle service provider, aimed at offering customers more sustainable travel options. This collaboration marks a significant first for airlines and comes as Japan’s urban areas grapple with increased traffic congestion and limited alternative transportation solutions for business travelers and tourists.

Many regional cities in Japan, facing inadequate public transport, are experiencing population decline and an aging demographic, highlighting the urgent need for new transportation solutions. Lime, originally known as Lime Bike, is a San Francisco-based company founded in 2017 that provides electric stand-up and seated scooters for shared use, promoting the adoption of lightweight electric vehicles.

The shift to electric vehicles instead of traditional cars can greatly reduce traffic congestion, alleviate overcrowding on public transport, improve air quality, and minimize the space needed for private car storage. Lime launched its services in Japan on August 19, 2024, aiming to enhance micromobility as a public transport option and contribute to a carbon-free future.

The partnership between Japan Airlines and Lime includes several key initiatives:

Mileage Program: Lime riders can earn 1 JAL mile for every 100 yen (tax excluded) spent on electric vehicle rentals, marking Japan’s first collaboration between an airline and an electric micromobility service.

Infrastructure Development: Lime will begin installing standing and seated e-scooter ports in Naha, Okinawa, targeting 40 ports with 180 vehicles available for full-scale service starting November 7, 2024.

Terry Tsai, Country Manager and Regional Head of Asia Pacific for Lime, expressed pride in this partnership, stating, “We aim to help tourists and local residents reduce their carbon footprint while providing seamless connections across our service zones.” Tsai emphasized the commitment to expanding the port network, making electric micromobility more accessible and promoting safe vehicle use to enhance sustainable transportation in the region.

Through this collaboration, Japan Airlines and Lime are poised to reshape urban mobility, providing eco-friendly options that meet the evolving needs of travelers and residents alike.
