K2 Airways to Launch Boeing 737 Freighter Operations in Pakistan

Pakistani start-up K2 Airways is set to begin Boeing 737 freighter operations on December 1, 2024, marking a significant development in the country’s cargo aviation sector. As reported by the Business Recorder, CEO Tariq Raja confirmed that K2 Airways has secured the necessary approvals from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, allowing it to commence domestic cargo flights. Initially, the airline will operate between major hubs in Islamabad, Karachi International, and Lahore International.

This move follows the recent addition of a B737-400(BDSF), registered as AP-BOI (msn 29210), to the K2 Airways fleet earlier this year. With this aircraft now ready for operations, K2 Airways aims to strengthen Pakistan’s domestic cargo network before expanding internationally. According to Raja, the airline plans to target the Gulf region as a next step, a strategic market where Gulf airlines currently transport approximately 700 tonnes of cargo daily to and from Pakistan.

Raja highlighted K2 Airways’ competitive advantage, noting that the start-up can offer lower freight rates than Gulf carriers, backed by localized operations that streamline logistics and reduce costs. This pricing strategy, combined with K2 Airways’ domestic focus, positions the company to attract businesses seeking cost-effective cargo solutions within Pakistan and for shipments to the Gulf region.

Looking ahead, K2 Airways has plans to further expand its fleet to meet anticipated demand. Raja previously mentioned intentions to acquire a second freighter by the end of 2024, with a goal of operating four aircraft within three years. This fleet expansion aligns with K2’s vision of becoming a key player in Pakistan’s growing cargo aviation sector, addressing both domestic and regional freight needs.

K2 Airways’ entry into the Pakistani cargo market adds a new dimension to the country’s aviation landscape, bringing competitive freight services to high-demand routes.
