New Delhi’s Noida International Airport Set to Open in 2025

Noida International Airport (DXN), located near New Delhi, is on track to begin commercial operations in the coming months. Initially, the airport will focus on domestic flights, with plans to expand to underserved international destinations in the future.

The airport, developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International, is in the final stages of construction. CEO Christoph Schnellmann shared that the second phase of trial operations is set to begin on November 15, 2024, and will continue for one month. The airport’s official opening is planned for April 17, 2025, though it could open sooner, possibly by the end of the first quarter of 2025.

Schnellmann highlighted that the team is finalizing the necessary regulatory documentation for the aerodrome license and other operational requirements. The airport has completed essential steps such as calibrating its Instrument Landing System and finalizing flight approach and departure procedures in coordination with the Airports Authority of India.

At its launch, Noida International Airport will feature a single runway and terminal with an annual capacity of 12 million passengers. The airport’s long-term vision, as outlined in its master plan, anticipates growth to accommodate 70 million passengers, positioning it to eventually rival New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Currently, two major low-cost carriers, IndiGo and Akasa, have committed to basing aircraft at the airport. Both carriers will initially focus on enhancing domestic connectivity, serving major metro cities and regional hubs. The airport is also in talks with airlines to expand into international markets, especially those in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, where demand for new routes remains strong.

Sustainability is a key priority for Noida International Airport. The facility is being designed with a focus on environmental responsibility, incorporating green space, electrical ground support equipment, and renewable energy. Schnellmann emphasized that the airport aims to operate with net-zero emissions and plans to source over 50% of its electricity from solar or wind energy within the next year. The facility’s design also includes room for expanding its renewable energy capacity as operations grow.

Strategically located about 50 miles south of New Delhi, the airport is positioned near the Yamuna Expressway. To further reduce traffic congestion and enhance accessibility, there are plans for high-speed rail links connecting the airport to other regions as passenger volumes increase.

With strong demand for both domestic and international connectivity, Noida International Airport is set to be a transformative hub for India’s aviation sector, supporting both the country’s economic growth and its increasing role in global travel.
