ITA Airways to Launch Rome to Tripoli Route in January 2025

Italy’s national carrier, ITA Airways, has announced it will begin flights from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport to Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport starting January 12, 2025. The new service, operating on Thursdays and Sundays, will be serviced by Airbus A319 aircraft.

Despite the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) extending its flight ban over Libyan airspace until the end of April 2025, ITA Airways remains committed to the route. EASA’s advisory warns of a “high risk” of attacks on civil aviation in Libyan airspace, but permits exceptions for coastal airports like Mitiga under specific conditions, such as approaching from the sea and coordinating operations with local authorities.

Andrea Benassi, ITA’s General Manager, emphasized the strategic importance of the new route. “Libya is a highly important market, and this route will enhance trade between our nations while supporting the many Italian businesses operating in the North African country,” he stated.

Libya’s aviation infrastructure has faced challenges due to ongoing instability following the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that overthrew longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi. While Tripoli International Airport was severely damaged during the 2014 civil war, Mitiga International Airport has served as the country’s primary gateway in the years since.

ITA Airways’ decision to proceed with this route signals a positive step for Italy’s ties with Libya, highlighting the airline’s commitment to facilitating air travel despite the region’s ongoing challenges. The carrier has worked closely with the Italian and Libyan governments, as well as Italy’s Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC), to ensure that safety protocols are in place and that operations can be conducted in accordance with international guidelines.
