Vietnam Airlines to Tender for 50 Narrowbody Jets in 2025
Vietnam Airlines (VN) is preparing to issue a tender for approximately 50 narrowbody jets in the first half of 2025, with a subsequent tender for a mix of widebody and narrowbody aircraft to follow. CEO Le Hong Ha shared the news at an aviation conference in Bandar Seri Begawan, stating that a non-binding agreement made in 2023 to consider purchasing fifty Boeing 737 MAX aircraft had not yet been finalized. While Boeing has provided favorable terms, Ha emphasized that all aircraft manufacturers would be invited to bid in the upcoming tender, reported ch-aviation.com.
One potential competitor in the tender is COMAC, the Chinese aircraft manufacturer, which is looking to expand its presence in neighboring markets. COMAC’s deputy general director, Wei Ying Bio, recently met with the Vietnamese prime minister, expressing the company’s interest in fostering cooperation with Vietnamese partners.
Vietnam Airlines currently operates a fleet of 97 aircraft, including Airbus and Boeing models. The fleet includes one A320-200N, forty-one A321-200s, twenty A321-200Ns, fourteen A350-900s, five ATR72-500s, eleven Boeing 787-9s, and five 787-10s. The airline is also awaiting delivery of additional A320-200Ns and 787-10s.
With plans to expand its fleet to around 170 aircraft by the middle of the next decade, Vietnam Airlines aims to capitalize on growing demand in the region and remain competitive in the global aviation market.
