Japan Airlines Plans Regional Jet Order for 2025

Japan Airlines (JAL) is preparing to place a significant regional jet order in 2025, aiming for deliveries to commence in the 2028 financial year, according to Yuji Saito, head of the airline’s corporate division. The announcement refines earlier projections shared by JAL’s senior vice-president for route marketing, Ross Leggett, who anticipated fleet renewal discussions to begin within the year.

Leggett emphasized that regional fleet updates are crucial for the airline, describing it as the “remaining piece of the puzzle.” However, he noted Japan’s shifting demographics, particularly its declining population, as a critical factor influencing the decision. Thinner regional routes are unlikely to grow in capacity, necessitating right-sized aircraft tailored for current demand.

Japan Airlines’ regional operations are supported by its subsidiaries, which operate under wet lease agreements. The group’s fleet includes thirteen ATR42-600s and two ATR72-600s operated by Japan Air Commuter and Hokkaido Air System. Additionally, J-Air contributes to the network with eighteen Embraer E170s and fourteen E190s.

This strategic move is expected to address the evolving dynamics of Japan’s aviation market, ensuring efficient connectivity across its regional routes. With limited options available for suitable regional jets, JAL’s decision could set the tone for fleet modernization across the Japanese aviation sector.

The forthcoming regional aircraft order highlights JAL’s commitment to adaptability and maintaining its position as a leader in the regional air travel market.
