British Airways (BA) faced a significant IT system failure on November 18, 2024, causing widespread flight delays and cancellations across Europe. The disruption began at approximately 5:00 p.m. local time and lasted several hours, impacting passengers and operations at airports throughout the United Kingdom.

One passenger in Hamburg reported that “pilots are grounded until they can get clearance to leave,” while another passenger stranded in Naples shared that their captain appeared “frustrated and embarrassed” by the lack of communication with British Airways.

The outage caused disruptions into the evening, affecting travel plans for numerous customers across Europe. British Airways resolved the issue by the morning of November 19, 2024, and announced that all systems were functioning normally. However, the fallout from the disruption, including passenger dissatisfaction and operational backlogs, underscored the challenges of maintaining seamless airline operations in the face of technical failures.
