US-based Mallard Enterprises and AeroTech Support Services have announced a significant partnership by signing a Letter of Intent (LOI) for the acquisition of 20 ME-1A amphibious aircraft. This agreement was unveiled at Air Expo Abu Dhabi 2024, marking a strategic move to enhance connectivity in the Indian market where amphibious aircraft play a crucial role in serving remote communities without traditional runway access.

The ME-1A amphibious aircraft, currently under development, is designed to meet the evolving needs of regional transportation. Capable of landing and taking off from both land and water, the ME-1A offers a standard seating capacity of up to 19 passengers. In a VIP configuration, it can accommodate 10 passengers with an extended range of 980 nautical miles, compared to its regular range of over 350 nautical miles with passengers and luggage. Mallard Enterprises highlights that the ME-1A boasts low emissions, minimal noise pollution, faster speeds, and reduced operating costs, making it an environmentally sustainable and economical choice for regional travel.

Dr. Ashwani Khanna, Executive Director at AeroTech Support Services, emphasized the benefits of the ME-1A for the Indian market. “The new generation ME-1A amphibious aircraft of 21st-century design is an ideal addition to the Indian market. It will provide a safe, reliable, economical, and environmentally sustainable travel experience for our customers to areas that were previously inaccessible,” Khanna stated during the announcement on November 21, 2024.

AeroTech Support Services, known for offering a range of specialized aviation and airport industry services, sees the ME-1A as a perfect fit for enhancing connectivity in India’s diverse and geographically challenging regions. The collaboration with Mallard Enterprises leverages AeroTech’s strong regional knowledge and extensive relationships within India, positioning both companies to effectively address the transportation needs of Tier 3 cities, islands, and coastal areas under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which aims to improve regional air connectivity.

Dan Peabody, Co-Founder and CEO of Mallard Enterprises, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “Mallard Enterprises is excited to partner with AeroTech, who has strong regional knowledge and access to a wealth of relationships within India. The ME-1A, with its competitive economics, amphibious capability, speed, and green credentials, fits well with AeroTech’s vision,” Peabody remarked.

The ME-1A’s design anticipates a future transition from traditional turbine propulsion to hydrogen-electric or fully electric propulsion systems, aligning with global trends towards sustainable aviation. This forward-thinking approach not only addresses current environmental concerns but also ensures that the ME-1A remains relevant in an increasingly eco-conscious market.

Earlier this year, Mallard Enterprises signed an LOI with Indian operator MEHAIR for 50 ME-1A amphibious aircraft at the Farnborough Airshow, further underscoring the growing demand for versatile and reliable amphibious aircraft in India. Mohan Chunduri, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer at Mallard Enterprises, highlighted the aircraft’s suitability for India’s diverse routes. “We look forward to providing AeroTech with modern, highly versatile amphibious aircraft that support their needs. The various UDAN routes provide last-mile connectivity to Tier 3 cities and remote locations, including islands and coastal areas, and the ME-1A is ideally suited for these operations,” Chunduri stated.

With this LOI, Mallard Enterprises and AeroTech Support Services are poised to make a significant impact on India’s regional aviation landscape. The deployment of the ME-1A fleet will enhance accessibility, support economic growth, and improve the quality of life for residents in remote areas by providing reliable and efficient air travel options. As both companies move forward with their plans, the ME-1A is set to become a cornerstone of regional aviation in India, bridging gaps and connecting communities like never before.
