Lisbon Airport Set for $246 Million Upgrade by 2027
ANA Aeroportos de Portugal has initiated a significant modernization project at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), with a €233 million ($246 million) investment aimed at enhancing the facility’s infrastructure and passenger experience. This marks the largest capital investment since Vinci Airports acquired ANA in 2013, reflecting a commitment to improving Portugal’s primary international gateway.
Consortium Led Modernization
The extensive upgrade project has been awarded to a consortium comprising industry leaders Mota-Engil, VINCI Construction Grands Projets, Alves Ribeiro, and HCI. The project is scheduled for completion by 2027, promising to significantly boost the airport’s capacity and functionality.
Expansion and Redesign Focus
Central to the modernization effort is the expansion of Terminal 1. This includes the construction of a new south pier, which will extend over 33,000 square meters (approximately 355,000 square feet). This new structure is designed to enhance the operational capacity of Lisbon Airport with 10 new boarding bridges and 12 additional aircraft parking stands.
In addition to the new pier, the project will also involve a comprehensive remodel of the existing Central Pier and a redesign of the south bus gates. These improvements are aimed at streamlining airport operations and improving accessibility, facilitating a smoother and more efficient passenger flow through the airport.
Sustainability at the Forefront
A key aspect of the Lisbon Airport modernization plan is its focus on sustainability. ANA aims to incorporate high-energy-performance infrastructure that not only enhances efficiency but also significantly reduces the airport’s carbon footprint. Initiatives include minimizing vehicle traffic on the apron, which is expected to contribute to lower carbon emissions.
Impact on Air Traffic and Carrier Operations
Lisbon Airport currently supports flights from 55 airlines, with TAP Air Portugal leading with a 46.6% share of all departure seats as of November 2024, according to OAG Schedules Analyser data. Ryanair and EasyJet follow as the second and third largest carriers respectively. With these modernizations, the airport’s overall capacity in 2024 is projected to reach about 20.4 million departure seats, indicating a 2% increase year-on-year.
Future Developments
The upgrade at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport coincides with broader developments in Portuguese aviation, including the government’s recent announcement to establish a new airport, Luis de Camoes Airport, in Alcochete, approximately 20 miles from Lisbon’s city center. This new airport is slated to be operational by 2034, aiming to further enhance Portugal’s aviation infrastructure and meet future travel demands.
